Abstract

Many inhibitors, such as the bleaching herbicide norflurazon, work against phytoene desaturase (PDS), an enzyme that is necessary for making plant carotenoids. It is possible for two double bonds to be added to 15-cis-phytoene through the middle compound 9,15-di-cis-phytofluene. This creates 9,15,9'-tri-cis- ζ-carotene. Necessary information is provided for a thorough analysis of the functional implications of the crystal structure of Oryza sativa PDS in a complex with norflurazon and a mathematical simulation.
