Early childhood is a vulnerable and impressionable time when nutrition is one of the greatest predictors for physical and intellectual development." In this paper, we review evidence on the importance of early feeding practices, feeding diversification and nutrient intake for the growth and development of children under 5 years of age. The analysis brings together evidence from dietary measurements, anthropometry and developmental observations to provide a comprehensive picture of the impact of nutrition in the first years of life. The results suggest that children who have proper and balanced nutrition have improved physical development and thinking ability. Breastfeeding practices like exclusive breastfeeding, appropriate introduction of complementary food to the child and regular availability of micronutrient-rich diet have been associated with better language, memory function and the ability to solve problems. Conversely, nutritional deficiencies have been linked to both physical and cognitive developmental delay, pointing to the vulnerability of children in this developmental window. Besides biological impacts, the study also demonstrates that there are social impacts of nutrition in terms of children's ability to fully participate in social interaction and learning environments. Good nutrition not only contributes to muscle and brain growth, but to curiosity, resilience and flexibility. These findings reveal the importance of looking at nutrition as part of an integrated early childhood care system rather than in isolation. In conclusion, this study reveals the importance of investing in early nutrition with its far-reaching implications. It is the assurance of the foundation for physical health, mental preparedness and life-long educational achievement. Early nutrition as the cornerstone of child development provides opportunities for parents, carers and policy makers to offer environments for children to get the best start in life.
