Statistical Analysis of Egg Production in White and Brown Birds Under Controlled Conditions

The study design was a comparison of the laying activity of white and brown birds kept in a controlled agricultural environment in the University of Kirkuk, Iraq. This sample population consisted of 100 laying birds of which 50 were white and 50 were brown birds divided into 10 experimental units with five birds per unit. The number of eggs produced was experimented over a span of seven weeks as an experimental time and the data collected were statistically analyzed through application of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to determine the differences between the two groups.

The result showed that the brown birds had higher egg production which was statistically greater than the white birds. The mean number of eggs per replication was 119.5 and the standard deviation of 26.55 in brown birds and 106.0 and standard deviation of 23.67 in the white birds. However, it was not found to be statistically significant (F = 1.44, p = 0.246). The number of eggs produced each week varied in both groups throughout the span of the study and the direction of change was that the late weeks showed general downwards trend. Descriptive statistics also found that, to a slight degree, the amount of eggs produced by brown and white birds varied.

Lastly, in the circumstances of the control adopted in this experiment there was a vastly similar productive performance of both the white and brown birds. Although the production of brown birds in numbers was greater, the fact that the outcome was not significantly different would have meant that both the kinds of birds are capable of doing satisfactorily when both are placed in comparable management conditions. These findings show the importance of environmental manipulation to the maintenance of laying performance and suggest that further studies using larger sample sizes and duration of an experiment should be conducted to clarify the potential differences between a species of birds.
