BZDs exhibit a higher risk of dependence and misuse. Over time, excitatory glutamine receptors may become more sensitive in tandem with a desensitization of GABA's inhibitory activity. Because of this neuroadaptive mechanism, many long-term users require higher dosages for comparable results. The sympathetic nervous system, potential seizures, and symptoms that are often the reverse of the intended therapeutic impact occur when the medication concentration in blood and tissue decreases. Due to their susceptibility to the effects of BZD, the elderly, children, pregnant women, and their newborns are the four primary populations that should be most concerned about this. Additionally, one study found that individuals prescribed BZD had a twofold increased chance of dying when compared to controls. Patients with schizophrenia on antipsychotic treatment frequently have sedative side effects, which have an impact on treatment compliance and the patients' quality of life. Strong data demonstrating the start and resolution of sedation is still lacking, despite the belief that tolerance to sedation develops. We sought to close this gap by evaluating the dynamics of sedation onset and resolution in individuals with schizophrenia using different antipsychotics. Clonazepam tapering is now used to treat withdrawal, whereas flumazenil should be used to address overdose. Few medications have been shown to be effective in randomized control trials when tried as a withdrawal treatment. There is space in the body of research for more investigation into non-BZD alternative approaches to withdrawal treatment.
